Ballard Link Extension
The Ballard Link Extension is a light rail expansion project that is one component of the Sound Transit 3 package that votes approved in 2016. The project would add 7.7 miles of light rail from SODO to Ballard, with a new tunnel through downtown, and 9 new stations.
One to two stations would be located in South Downtown, and HSD supports community outreach and education throughout the planning process to ensure that this project supports thriving CID and PSQ neighborhoods.

BLE Project
South Downtown Area
The 2022 DEIS provided one station within the South Downtown, located either at 5th Ave S or 4th Ave S approximately at King Street.
During a further study period, Sound Transit developed a 2 station option (called North and South at that time) that became the preferred alternative station locations going into this next DEIS. This would also relocate the original Midtown station from its location at 5th and Madison.
The preferred alternative since 3/23/23 is a station located south of Dearborn at 6th Ave (Dearborn St Station) and a Midtown station at James and 4th.
